West Milford — Christine Leonescu, West Milford’s Jazzercise instructor and center owner, is celebrating her 13th year as a certified instructor of the largest dance-fitness program in the world.
Christine teaches classes seven days a week at her West Milford Jazzercise Fitness Center, located at 1884 Union Valley Road.
“It’s no secret that exercise improves your overall general health, will increase your metabolism, and add years to your life,” said Leonescu. “But not all workouts are created equal.”
Leonescu said there are many different types of exercise that are necessary to promote overall health. Regular weight-bearing exercise, aerobic exercise, and strength training all have specific targets and are vital to good health. Regular weight-bearing exercise, such as Jazzercise, jogging, and racquet sports, is necessary in the fight against osteoporosis; Aerobic exercise is necessary to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and risk of heart disease. It also lifts the serotonin levels which help you ‘feel good.’ Strength training is necessary to increase bone density, decrease body fat, and improve posture, balance and mobility. Jazzercise, she said, is an easy and fun way to incorporate all of these elements and get a total body workout.
“It is designed for people of all ages and abilities,” Leonescu added,
Jazzercise started in 1969 when Judi Sheppard Missett turned her love of jazz dance into a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon, Her exercise program grew into an international franchise business that today hosts a network of 7,500 instructors teaching in 32 countries. The workout program offers a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kick boxing movements, Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.
