About The Coalition For A Drug-Free Hawaii

The Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii provides innovative programs and services that help keep Hawaii children and families healthy, strong, and resilient against drug and alcohol abuse. Formed in 1987 out of a spirit of business and community concern, CDFH has become a highly regarded leader in the substance abuse prevention field in Hawaii.

Their aim is for every child in the islands to have the opportunity to grow up drug-free. To accomplish this, they conduct family strengthening services, best practice program for youth, capacity building with communities, training and technical assistance, and public awareness campaigns. Our Prevention Resource Center also serves as Hawaii's Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR) Center for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention educational materials, resources, and programs.

The Prevention Resource Center

Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii (CDFH) was designated to become part of a revolutionary national program known as the Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (R.A.D.A.R.) Network. The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) was established to raise awareness, connect people to resources, and motivate people to take action to prevent drug abuse in Hawaii. The PRC supports the implementation of effective family, youth and community-oriented programs, as well as services that foster resiliency, recovery, personal strength and healthy lifestyle choices.

The PRC houses the state’s most comprehensive collection of books, periodicals, brochures, fact sheets, and videos on drug abuse, prevention, and related issues. The PRC Lending Library is open to the public for research or to borrow videos and books. The PRC Clearinghouse disseminates free informational materials, such as brochures, pamphlets, and statewide directories:

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES)

The mission of the CCES is to foster ethical sport for all Canadians.

History
Born out of a landmark merger between the Canadian Centre for Drug-Free Sport and Fair Play Canada, the CCES is founded on the principles of fair play and drug-free sport. We have built upon the solid foundation of the internationally recognized pioneering organizations, to create and promote the kind of sport environment Canadians desire and deserve.

Funding
As a non-profit organization independent from sport organizations and government, the CCES receives its funding from a variety of sources including Sport Canada, fee-for-service revenues, and grants. The CCES audited financial statements are available in our Annual Report.

Comprehensive Approach
The CCES is responsible for a range of issues important to sport and society. We strive for a just, fair and ethical sport system, including the achievement of fair play, drug-free sport, equity, safety and non-violence. As part of our comprehensive approach, the CCES provides top-quality services and resources to a broad range of clients, including athletes, coaches, sport organizations, the media and the general public.

It is the belief of the CCES that in order to decrease unethical conduct in sport, we need to increase ethical conduct. To do this the CCES has organized its work using a comprehensive approach that includes: research; advocacy and promotion; prevention; policy development; and detection and deterrence.

This approach provides the opportunity to tackle unethical issues in sport from many different perspectives, and the opportunity to promote ethical conduct in sport using a values-based approach.

Quality and Process Driven
The CCES is an ISO certified organization responsible for the implementation and management of Canada’s Anti-Doping Program.

The new World Anti-Doping Code was formally accepted by the CCES in November 2008. The Code results in better anti-doping programs for the athletes against whom Canadians compete internationally.

Proud member of Canada’s True Sport Movement
The CCES is one of Canada’s early leaders in the True Sport Movement, Canada’s social movement for sport and community. True Sport extends from the playground to the podium, ranging from simple pick-up games to community and school-based sport leagues to elite high-performance competition. The goal of True Sport is to help sport live up to its full potential as a public asset for Canada and Canadian society.

True Sport makes a significant contribution to the healthy development of youth, the health and well-being of individuals, and the quality of life in Canadian communities. At the heart of True Sport are four core values: fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun (www.truesport.ca).

One of the cornerstones of True Sport is the importance of doping-free sport. Doping is not healthy or fair – doping undermines True Sport.

Celebrate Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month in February 2010

Join the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii in celebrating February 2010 as the 18th annual statewide Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month to promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles and raise public awareness about substance abuse.

The campaign’s signature event, the Island Heritage 10th Annual Backyard Jam will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010, Noon to 5 pm, at Kapi`olani Park Bandstand. Families can spend time together and enjoy a day of music, keiki activities, ono grindz, and learning about healthy choices. This year’s Backyard Jam will showcase bands Kawao and Jahmaka, Ewalani Hula Maids and Na Kane Hula, and other guests. Event sponsors are Madden Corporation, HMSA, and A&B Foundation along with many community partners.

Other activities:

Proclamations Presentations. Lt. Governor Aiona and County Mayors will kick off the month with official proclamations.

The Ola Pono “Live Right” for a Safe and Drug-Free Hawaii Awards. Winners will be announced along with plans for a luncheon ceremony to honor these special people who make a difference in their community.

Library displays, poster contests, rallies, resource fairs, and educational presentations. Activities will be held by schools, businesses, libraries, and community agencies to get the drug-free message out to youth, parents, employees, and others.
