WNBF's Rich Fitter on Drug Testing & Banned Substances

From Rich Fitter of the WNBF/INBF:

The question of using polygraph exams from one organization to another was recently raised. Although this idea may seem financially beneficial to the athletes, it is not possible due to differences in the banned substance list between natural bodybuilding federations.
One product that the INBF/WNBF Executive Committee has received inquires about is DHEA. While some natural organizations do allow this hormone in specific amounts, this product is banned by the INBF/WNBF, even in minimal amounts. Because DHEA can cause higher than normal levels of androgens, it could cast a shadow of doubt on a person’s natural status should they fail a drug test. The INBF/WNBF wants to eliminate all potential risks to athlete’s reputations.

7-oxo-DHEA (also known as 7-keto-DHEA), 7alpha-hydroxy-DHEA (7alpha-OH-DHEA) and 7beta-hydroxy-DHEA (7beta-OH-DHEA) are not banned by the WNBF or INBF when used for weight loss. Although hormonal metabolites of DHEA, they do not elevate testosterone levels and can be used by WNBF or INBF athletes.

The INBF/WNBF has always taken great pride in maintaining the most stringent and extensive banned substance list in the sport. This is done not only for ethical reasons, but also for the safety of the athletes. While some organizations take the “if you can pass the test, its fine” approach, the INBF/WNBF has provided athletes with a list of what is banned. In the event an athlete is unsure of a product, he or she can contact Charlie Carollo for approval via e-mail at inbf@epix.net.
