He's also a key figure in the massive steroid case against Staten Island doctor Richard Lucente .
Baglio's heart gave out at a March 2007 bodybuilding competition after, prosecutors allege, he ingested steroids illegally prescribed by Lucente. He was 40 at the time of his death.
Prosecutors charge Lucente began prescribing Baglio steroids and human growth hormone in 2005, and continued to do so after Baglio's heart transplant in late 2006.
The patient was dead a few months later.
District Attorney Charles J. Hynes said at a press conference today Lucente wrote prescriptions to patients who had no medical need for them, then steered them to a pharmacy in Brooklyn in return for kickbacks. Charges in the 76-count indictment include criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance and reckless endangerment.
Lucente was to be arraigned at noon.
According to a bodybuilder message board, Baglio was in Columbus, Ohio, to work the MET-RX booth at the Arnold Classic Expo when he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. According to his obituary in the Advance, Baglio died at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, of heart problems.
"Too many young people die for no reason in this sport," said a commenter on the Muscular Development forum after Baglio's death.
Baglio was devoted to his dog, Minnesota, named after the Minnesota Vikings football team. In July 2001, Mr. Baglio and Minnesota, a St. Bernard, took first place in the Pet/Owners Look-a-Like contest during the inaugural Pooch Parade at Clove Lakes Park.
